Clinical Psychologist Sonoma, CA - Jerry Silver, Ph.D.

About Dr. Silver

I have been working in the mental health field for over 40 years after earning my Ph.D. from the California School of Professional Psychology, San Diego. I then moved to Sonoma in 1977 where I accepted a position with Sonoma County as a clinical psychologist. Working at a small outreach clinic in the town of Sonoma, I provided a wide range of psychological services ranging from crisis intervention to more long term, depth psychotherapy.

After working with the county full time for several years I shifted my position to part time and established a private psychotherapy practice. When Sonoma County closed the outreach clinic in Sonoma, I was transferred to Juvenile Hall where I worked with at-risk adolescents and their families. Along with another psychologist, we established an internship training program for doctoral level psychologists. At Juvenile Hall as well as throughout my career, I have supervised and trained many master and Ph.D. level therapists.

After 25 years of service with Sonoma County Mental Health, I left the County and accepted a position as chief consulting psychologist for the Valley of the Moon Medical Group. When that organization moved to Marin County, I chose to remain in Sonoma. It was around this time that I was asked to develop a mental health program for the Sonoma Valley Community Health Center. I was hired as the Behavioral Health Director and maintained that position for 12 years. Along with developing their behavioral health program, I provided direct therapy as well as clinical supervision for the behavioral health staff.

I am now focusing on my private practice where I see clients in my downtown Sonoma office. I consider my areas of specialty as follows:

  • Individual, couples and family therapy.
  • Marital relationship therapy.
  • Life transitions.
  • Retirement
  • Loss
  • Divorce Separation
  • Anxiety and panic attacks.
  • Depression
  • Post Traumatic Stress.
  • Stress management.
  • Self Esteem and identity issues.
  • Parental control and effectiveness issues.
  • School, drug and behavioral problems.
  • Chronic pain and illness.
  • Weight control.
  • Bariatric surgical evaluations.

On a more personal note, I have been married to my wonderful partner, Maia Silver, for over 30 years. Maia is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and also brings her healing gifts to assist with companion animals. We enjoy many outdoor activities together including hiking, camping, canoeing and traveling. We are both “dog people” and very much enjoy our relationship with our canine companion, Clara. I also enjoy downhill skiing, woodworking and seem to be constantly involved in various ongoing home improvement projects.
